If you are new to traditional braces, parties and gatherings can be hard. Often, there are foods there that you’ve been able to eat your whole life, but suddenly can’t. This can be discouraging. It is true that you may need to skip that bowl of mixed nuts during cocktail hour–remember that your oral health comes first. But don’t fret! There are still a lot of foods you can eat. Include these in the party, and you’ll be feeling great about your treats–and your brand-new smile that you are working toward!

Chocolate: While you should avoid chocolate’s close friend, sticky caramel, you don’t need to worry about chocolate itself. Dark chocolate is best for mouth health and is especially delicious. Avoid mixed filled chocolates and bridge mix, as these contain fillings that can damage braces. For a fun adventure, try making your own chocolates with soft, braces-friendly fillings!

Fruit: Thinly sliced apples sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and a little lemon can be a fun, crisp snack at any party. Make sure to make thin slices so you don’t damage your braces! Try different varieties, such as Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Granny Smith. Cotton candy grapes can also be a super-sweet, crisp treat. Chocolate-covered strawberries are an elegant crowd-pleaser, as well.

Cake or pies: Always a hit with guests, a beautifully decorated cake or show-stopping, bubbling pie can be a gorgeous centerpiece at a party or dinner. Just be sure to avoid nuts and sticky dried fruit! Try a mile-high lemon meringue, a chocolate gooey butter cake, or a mixed berry tart. Be sure to brush your teeth and floss extra carefully on the days you eat sugar and accompany all desserts with a tall glass of water!
