Dentofacial orthopedics is an orthodontic treatment that focuses on facial growth and development. This treatment largely occurs during childhood and helps normalize the growth of bone structure, and repair imbalances of the face and jaws. It is often a two-phase treatment process, beginning when the patient is about seven or eight years old.

Children are the best candidates for dentofacial orthopedics. Our orthodontist will examine and monitor your child’s growth from a young age to determine if and when this treatment will be effective. If your child begins orthodontic treatment prior to the eruption of all adult teeth, he or she will receive “Phase-One” dentofacial treatment. During this stage, Dr. Arjun Patel will use treatment designed to correct jaw growth and ensure that the jaw bone is aligned correctly before the second phase of treatment. The second phase of dentofacial orthopedics typically involves the use of braces to straighten misaligned teeth.

While adults can benefit from dentofacial orthopedics, their treatment process may involve surgery. In children, jaw bones are still forming and might not have hardened yet, which makes it easier for bone growth and tooth movements to be guided and corrected. In adults, bones have stopped growing and have long since hardened, presenting greater obstacles when adjusting bites and straightening teeth. Our orthodontist may recommend that you undergo surgery to adjust the jaw bone and establish the correct bite alignment before you begin straightening treatments with braces.
